Bike Valet: Park in Style

Bike Valet at the Culver City Art Walk

What is a bike valet?

Bike valets provide safe, centralized, “luxury” parking for cyclists, who are too often relegated to locking up their bikes at the nearest young tree or signpost. Valets are also a way for bike businesses and associations to reach out to the cycling community, and show those who are considering cycling that bikes are encouraged and welcome. Finally, for event organizers, bike valets are an incredibly simple way of going green and reducing the traffic and parking problems their events create.

Transition Culver City, in partnership with the Culver City Bicycle Coalition (CCBC), ran its first bike valet at the Car Show this May – which happens to be National Bike Month.

Last Saturday, CCBC parked over 30 bikes at the incredibly successful Culver City Art Walk. Cyclists took home goody bags with donations from Wonderful Pistachios, Sport Eve, Subway and MTA. CCBC also raffled a pair of Dodger tickets to members who joined  during the bike valet, and 6 pairs of tickets to the American Cinematheque for those who signed up on the CCBC mailing list. Many thanks to these CCBC sponsors, in addition to Culver City Cultural Affairs for initiating the valet, Sony for donating the bike racks to the city, and valet partners LACBC and the Culver City Bicycle and Pedestrian Initiative.

More to come!

Look out for a huge CCBC bike valet at the upcoming Eat Real Festival (food trucks, D.I.Y. projects, demos and more) at the Helms Bakery on July 16th & 17th.

For the third year in a row, Fiesta La Ballona will also provide a bike valet to encourage Fiesta patrons to leave their cars, and parking challenges, behind. Palms Cycle will run the valet, assisted by CCBC, August 26-28 in Vets Park.

CCBC invites you to enjoy these great Culver City events without putting carbon into the air: leave your cars behind, park with us!

One Response to Bike Valet: Park in Style

Is there anyway to suggest to the folks who run the Cardiff Garage to repurpose the 2 parking spaces which they’ve permanently blocked off on the first floor by adding bike parking there? It would be excellent, especially during the Tuesday farmers market when every rack, tree and sign within a few blocks has a bike attached to it. They could set it up similarly to the Highland Park Bike Corral http://lacbc.wordpress.com/2011/02/18/bike-corral-celebration/

No wave racks or wheel benders please.

    Jus a thought……
