El Marino Language School kicked off Bike Month with a huge Kids Bike Safety Festival, Sunday May 6. Over 120 kids participated and learned how to bike better and safer. Stay tuned as we post updates throughout the month.

It’s an enjoyable way to get to downtown and mostly an easy flat ride with a couple short hills. Please reply if you will be joining us at Media Park.

North East Trees is working on a grant with Culver City to improve passive recreation spaces in our city parks, and ensure they are bicycle and pedestrian accessible.

Goals & Objectives

• To increase the value of Culver City Parks to a broader segment of the local community through passive recreation while creating an urban environment that enhances personal and environmental health.
• Make the city parks and open space more appealing and accessible to seniors, people with disabilities, individuals without children and children not participating in organized sports. Provide passive recreational open space within walking (biking, wheelchair, stroller) distance of all city neighborhoods.
• Increase social engagement and join the communities that use the parks and open space through these passive recreation sites.
• Plan for ecologically functional, water-wise, low maintenance spaces and monitor their success, while educating the public about environmental issues (such as water pollution, green house gasses and energy and water conservation) and promoting environmental stewardship through site-specific uses.
• Use community outreach to ensure that the general public has the opportunity to be engaged in the planning process and get the community’s perspective for their specific needs and wants.

Culver City Mayor Mehaul O’Leary and CCBC have started a Mondays with the Mayor community bike ride. Each week we will take a little tour of Culver City, discuss community issues, chat about how we can improve the bike-ability in the area and how good the NY Giants really are.

Imagine getting in your car, driving on a newly developed route to your destination only to discover there is absolutely no place available to park. I don’t mean the spaces are all filled, but rather there are no parking spaces! None, zip, nada. Over the past several years bike plans have been taking shape in many cities and regions around us, developing routes to make trips around the city safer and more practical for cyclists. The problem is, in many places there is little or no parking set aside for bikes. For cycling to succeed as a viable transportation option, bicycle parking should be as common as car parking.

Providing bike parking is good business. Bike parking is scalable and inexpensive to build. While some may think it crazy to even suggest removing a single car space, Santa Monica removed 27 car spaces at it’s Santa Monica Place, replacing them with the Santa Monica Bike Center. The Bike Center offers numerous bike services with parking for up to 350 bicycles in a secure setting. Let me say that again, 27 car spaces now are occupied by 350 secure bike spaces. That’s 13 new customers by bike for every one customer who arrived by car. If you own a business ask yourself what would it be worth to your business to get 13 more customers for every parking space you now have?

The CCBC is grateful for everyone’s support this past year, and to help you settle into 2012, here’s a simple resolution that’s easy to follow:

Move more.

That’s it. Resolve to be more active in 2012. According to Dr. Mike Evans, just 60 minutes of activity per week will reduce your risk of heart disease by half. That’s right, 50% reduction of risk by adding 10-15 minutes of activity a day 5-6 days a week.

To demonstrate the basis of his theory, watch “23 1/2 hours, What is the single best thing we can do for our health?”. Maybe the best 9 minutes you’ll spend in 2012.

So in 2012, resolve to do one errand a week by bike. Walk around your block before getting in your car in the morning. Park 5 blocks from your children’s school and walk them the rest of the way. Maybe even bike to school with them. It’s good for you. Good for the kids and good for the community.
